The validator reads the doctype as xhtml and tries to validate that. When it sees html it doesn't like it. The way I cleaned it up on <a href="http://www.webboise.com" rel="nofollow">my site</a> is using <a href="http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/library/x-tiptidy.html" rel="nofollow">HTML Tidy</a>. I can't exactly take credit for the interface... I pretty much just selected it. Wordpress is awesome. You can find hundreds of themes out there, you select the one you want, and say 'use it'. You might have to do some tweaks, but its not major. Uh... I mean... this took hours and hours to do and was lots of heavy lifting...
